Boating Safety

We at Brockport Yacht Club prioritize the safety and well-being of our members and guests on the water. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to boating, it’s essential to understand and practice boating safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

The Rochester NY News media turns to Brockport Yacht Club when they need to learn about boating safety. Watch News Source 8 WROC interview our very own boating safety expert John Stevens for advice for a safe and happy boating season.

Safety Tips:

  • Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a properly fitting life jacket when on board, especially for children and non-swimmers. Ensure that life jackets are readily accessible for all passengers.
  • Check the Weather: Before heading out, check weather forecasts and conditions. Be prepared for changes in weather and sea conditions, and avoid boating in severe weather.
  • File a Float Plan: Let someone know your boating plans, including your destination, expected return time, and contact information. This ensures that help can be sent if you encounter difficulties.
  • Know the Rules of the Waterway: Familiarize yourself with navigational rules, buoys, and markers. Obey speed limits and maintain a safe distance from other vessels, swimmers, and navigational hazards.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and significantly impairs judgment and coordination. Assign a designated skipper who will remain sober while operating the vessel.
  • Carry Safety Equipment: Ensure your boat is equipped with essential safety gear, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, distress signals, navigation lights, and a first aid kit. Regularly inspect and maintain safety equipment.
  • Practice Safe Navigation: Keep a lookout for other vessels, swimmers, and hazards. Maintain a safe speed, especially in crowded or restricted areas, and be aware of wake effects on nearby boats.
  • Stay Informed: Stay informed about local boating regulations, restrictions, and hazards. Take boating safety courses to improve your skills and knowledge.

Emergency Procedures:

In case of an emergency on the water, it’s crucial to remain calm and follow proper procedures:

  • Call for help immediately using marine radio or mobile phone.
  • Provide your location, nature of emergency, and number of people on board.
  • Follow instructions from emergency responders and use distress signals if necessary.
  • Administer first aid to injured persons and provide assistance while awaiting help.
